Welcome to Gourav’s home page.
Technology is an important component of the world. At the same time, technology has also generated a lot of controversy over the last decade. At first it was mostly centered around privacy, or the lack of it. Over the past 5-6 years, the concerns have changed to misuse of social media platforms for political and geopolitical gains.
Apart from this, manipulation by big tech and exploitation of monopolistic powers has also been a huge concern. This has led to growing concern about the powers of big tech over ruling entities in sovereign states.
All this has caused a shift in how tech savvy people view and use the internet. There has been a growing push towards open source software and self hosted solutions as alternatives to products served by big tech.
Late last year, I too got interested in this phenomenon. I am now operating my own VPS. Even though I have not actively started using any self hosted platforms yet, that is where I am headed. This blog, for instance, has now moved from a managed host to my VPS and is now completely self hosted. That is not all. This VPS also hosts multiple domains, meaning I can have multiple websites on a single server, unlike managed hosting where the cheapest plans allow only one domain. And with my own reverse proxy setup, managing subdomains is also a breeze.
You can visit my self hosted homepage at gvkr.in. Though, nothing except this blog is publicly accessible, it gives a glimpse of what I have tried so far and what I’m planning to work on.
I will keep updating this blog with new projects I take on and write my experiences here, with the hope that some day I’ll be able to help someone have their own self-hosted setup.
